Google is entering the operating system universe with Google Chrome OS. Google Chrome is the name of the browser Google put out almost 12 months ago and an indication of where Google is heading.

What It Is not

Chrome isn't a Windows Vista kind of futile attempt to change the landscape of desktop computers. It is not intended to replace desktop operating systems required to run full blown programs like Photoshop or AutoCAD. It is not something every Internet Sales Manager will even have much use for and it is not associated with Google's Android operating system for smartphones.

What It Is

The main objective of Google's Chrome OS is a lightweight, fast and secure alternative to the limited alternatives available today. It is basically a browser masked as an operating system and it's debut will be a minimal open source web operating system directed only at netbooks. It will work with online applications (which of course Google already offers in the form of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Documents, Reader and so on), but this browser will not be confined to only Google's offerings.

Keeping it lightweight and stashing important data in the cloud will allow it to dodge the common spyware, virus and malware problems that harass today's operating systems s security is clearly addressed. It's a smart fit for netbooks because since it requires very little computer hardware or resources to run. In a nutshell it's the perfect OS for netbooks with the objective to just get online and get there quickly.

Who It's For

There's been talk of businesses moving their data and programs "into the cloud" with progressively more powerful online applications. If your typical day is almost exclusively internet-based Chrome OS could be perfect for you, but this browser is not for those that need heavy duty desktop-based applications at the ready. Few Dealer Internet departments, even in large dealer groups assign a full time person to focus on such things as social media, but if much of your time is occupied with social networking, Facebook, Twitter, Google Apps, or Zoho then a minimum netbook system that gets you there and gets you there fast might be very attractive.

When It Will Be Available

Chrome OS will not be available for download until companies like Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, ASUS, Acer and Lenovo get on board. Rumor now has it that summer of 2010 is the current time line. While most ISM's won't be holding their breath for the release of Chrome, it will surely be a newsworthy shakeup in netbook options for cloud computing people.
