Auto manufacturers and car dealers shift up a gear in 2010, according to Borrell Associates.

Idling, then stalling for the past few years, ad spend in the auto industry is set to rev up again, projected to increase 4.1% to over $19 billion in 2010.

Online advertising has been paying dividends generating more ups to dealerships from online campaigns. Digital advertising will total about 5% of ad spend this year, and undoubtedly increase in years to come. The shift to digital continues at full speed; after all, are any dealerships increasing budgets for print advertising?

Borrell's latest study, "Running on Empty (http://www.borrellassociates.com/component/virtuemart/?page=shop.product_details&flypage=garden_flypage.tpl&product_id=463)", projects auto manufacturers increasing online spending by 14% next year, and dealers increasing theirs around 9%.

Video with sound continues to accelerate on both dealer and manufacturers' sites and studies show online shoppers want to see what cars look like as well as how they handle. According to Borrell, "All the pieces are in place for a break-out to more common use next year," and PointRoll issued a report data (http://www.bizreport.com/2009/09/pointroll_auto_advertisers_need_rich_media.html) that shows this enhancement outperforming all other options in auto advertising.

Search engine optimized landing pages with video walkarounds and the ability to upload ads will roll out soon guzzling more of auto dealers ad spend. Quick to become standard equipment this development will speed the shift to digital further still. After all, like the auto dealers web site what good is digital advertising if no one can find you on the Internet?
